The disease I chose at the beginning of this course is Legionnaires' Disease, which is a form of pneumonia caused by the water-borne legionella bacteria (CDC, 2021). The symptoms of Legionnaires' Disease include cough, increased shortness of breath, both headaches and muscle aches, and a fever. Unfortunately, this is not something that can be easily screened for as the primary detection methods are a chest x-ray and a confirmatory sputum sample and/or a urine test (CDC, 2021).

In order to develop a screening process for this disease, I would initiate a paper screening form for those who have symptoms of Legionnaires' Disease in order to assess if they were in an environment conducive to contracting the disease. Secondly, I feel that a urine sample would be the most appropriate and effective way to clinically test for Legionnaires' Disease. As the illness I chose to focus on for this class is not spread from person to person and rather uncommon, I do not feel that it is pertinent to screen those who are asymptomatic or have not been in an environment that promotes the spread of the disease (hot tubs/pools, areas with large, common water systems, etc).

We have covered a multitude of topics over this course. I very much enjoyed the lessons covering the skills needed to track down the food-linked outbreak ( attack rate especially). Also, although I did have some trouble deciphering the differences in utilization of the different types of studies, I very much enjoyed learning about the process as a whole as it is not something I have had a chance to learn thus far. I feel that I have grown as a result of learning concepts that were incredibly foreign to me a few weeks ago. I hope to use these concepts as I begin to work toward a career in the Public Health field upon graduation.

As an epidemiologist, my passion would be to work with children that may be experiencing negative health effects from social determinants of health such as low socioeconomic status, lack of food or proper sanitation, or unstable housing situations. I feel that all children deserve the best chance for a healthy life, and by making this demographic my focus I hope to make a positive change.
