Module 5 Discussion: Perceiving Style In The Objects Of Everyday Life

Perceiving Style in the Objects of Everyday Life

Runs February 14 - 20

Look around you in your home, on your commute, or in your workplace. Various forms of artistic expression surround you whether its in the designed objects that we use every day, from our toothbrushes to our coffee makers, to the objects and images we frame and hang on our walls. Select one of these of interest to you, photograph it, and share it with the class. Try to avoid selecting something perceived as art and find something you might easily overlook.  In your opinion, how would you describe this objects style?  For example, is it visually simple (basic lines and few or no colors) or wildly complicated and ornamented?  Is it realistic, abstract, or neither?  Why do you think you are attracted to this style? Is it like any of the artists works introduced in this weeks readings? In what ways?

Peer Prompt:  Post two replies to two other student's posts. Your replies should be thoughtful and should elaborate on the question. Do you perceive this style differently? Please be constructive in your replies and see the attached grading rubric for more on how you will be evaluated.

Format: You may post a written response or a multimedia (audio or video) response. For either, you must include references, properly cited, at the end of your post. Be sure to edit your writing for grammatical errors before posting. You may also attach or embed images to illustrate your observations. This may be helpful to visually illustrate examples that are difficult to put into words. If you select the multimedia option, please refer to the instructional video attached to the Introductions forum for guidance. Audio or video files should be around 3-5 minutes and should not exceed 5 minutes. If you choose this option, speak clearly and not too quickly. Consider adding closed captions after you record so that it's easy for everyone to follow. Ask me if you need help.

Cautionary note: Please make sure to use your own words in your answer. Don't lift or slightly reword entire passages from your readings or an online source (without citing and quoting it). This is considered plagiarism, and you'll receive no credit.
